Ever since Cesar passed away, his son Jean-Louis Newashish has continued in his father's footsteps. In the Summer he gathers a group of young delinquent kids from the village of Manouane and takes them out to live in the bush for 3 months. There he teachesd them survival, teamwork, and birch-bark canoe building. At the end of the Summer, the participants board their hand-crafted canoes and paddle down the St-Maurice river to the St-Lawrence river. Then paddle to Montreal and arrive there wearing traditional Abenakis costumes. I had the pleasure of meeting Jean-Louis on two ocassions and I have seen (and touched) some of his canoes. I really felt honoured.
Cesar has built birch-bark canoes for many museums.
