I agree with Bill that the important thing is that it be completely strait. I've had good luck with gluing two pieces of 1x4 (.75x3.5) to make a 1.5x3.5 blank. I've made two cedar and one junk pine (white wood) paddles. The junk pine is not that much heavier.
All my paddles have knots in them, so go with the best of whats around. I've yet to go to a "real" lumber store so that might be part of it.
