You can probably approximate the effect on a skinned kayak by using a spray bottle and spraying in the same spot until the dye dissipates to the desired burst size. Do all the bursts for one colour and allow to dry before changing colour. You may want to experiment with a piece of fabric stretched over a square frame before you muck up the yak.
