Actually if you look at my "after" picture, which is actually "part-way-through" you can see that I have yet to sand the hull real good. It still has resin impregnated. Acetone seemed to help just a tiny tiny bit- not much. It seemed to let the sandpaper bite into the resin. Once I got it to bite it was easy going with a random-orbit sander. I did step up (more coarse) to 60 grit for the bottom. 80 wasn't enough. I thought it would scar the wood, but it did not. In some spots I did have to use a plane and shave a bit off where the resin was soaked in really deep, then I sanded. Anyway, I am happy to answer any questions your friend has. Honestly this was quite easy- not at all what I expected. The main thing is when you bleach, thin it very very thin with water or it will leave stains.

Later on I will post some pics of where I took much stronger bleach and painted it just on the white pine to whiten it up. The kayak is ready now for resin- which yes, really does cost that much!!!!
