Yes, I am familiar with it and keep a huge stockpile of it for jigs and braces and other things when I need a strong but inexpensive wood. I lucked up at HD and they were selling the S4S stuff for 50 cents a board. That's PER BOARD, not board foot!!! Why? I have no idea, but I asked to be sure it wasn't a mistake, and then I bought almost all of their stock except some warped and damaged pieces. The pieces I got were perfedt. I have been reluctant to use it for a kayak because I had heard it was not rot resistant and I really thought it was much heavier than what it is. I saw the weight was similar to pine and thought maybe I could try it. It sure is good stuff to work with.
Anyway, I checked on the Caribbean Mahogany today and he's got a fair price. He couldn't tell me what mahogany it most closely resembled in character. It seems very dense. It is dark dark red- like a rusty blood red. Looks like redwood in rough cut form. It should make a gorgeous frame. I didn't realize he gets it locally, so it will be really cool to have a yak built from local wood even if it's a bit heavy. I will post pics as I build her which I hope is soon.
