I found out today it's local grown and he calls it "Caribbean Mahogany." I suspect very similar to Cuban Mahogany, which is CITES protected by that name. This stuff is dark rusty red- like a dark redwood. It is beautiful when finished. Almost irridescent. Very tight-grained. I am fearing it's going to be heavy, but curiosity killed the cat, so it can kill the kayak too... I'm going with it. It will be nice to have a kayak from local wood, and if it's too heavy to use it will make a lovely dining table!
