If you are not comfortable with the support your roof rack provides, just extend it.
You can buy a cheap aluminum ladder at a yard sale, or get a pair of 10-foot-long 2x4s, or 2x6s.
Clamp or bolt those to your roof rack and you'll have a long supporting base. Pad that with foam, carpet scraps, or custom fitted cradles. Your choice on how elaborate you want to get.
