: I'm working on a wood framed, nylon skinned Sea Pup. The Yost coamings are
: designed for PVC skinning and sandwich the skin between a frame mounted
: base ring and the exterior portion of the coaming.
: I'd appreciate a little advice on the best way to mate the coaming to the
: skin.
: Options are: 1- Follow the PVC directions and sandwich the nylon between base
: and coaming (Screw through the fabric to clamp the Exterior coaming to the
: base plate)?
: 2- Delete the base ring and sew the nylon to the wood of the coaming?
: 3- combine the two, leave the base ring there, route the nylon over the base,
: sew to the coaming?
: 4- some better idea?
: The coaming I'm building is bent strips. They are bent and clamped to dry,
: but not yet glued (see link). The vertical wall of the coaming is 3 strips
: totaling about 0.6" thick, and the lip is another 0.4". If I go
: with either of the sewed options I can delete a ring and thin the wall to
: 0.4".
: Any thoughts?
Amazing that almost all of my questions have been answered on this forum. Trouble is, I'm usually already past the decision when finding the answer.
Anyway, I have the two-part Tom Yost-style coaming. I like the sturdiness, but my wife (who will be the recipient of the boat) alerted me to the issue of damage from the screws to the fabric causing runs (think nylon stockings). Not sure that this will be a big problem given the different kind of nylon and the two-part urethane coating.
Given that tomorrow is the skinning day, my plan is to
1) draw the skin tight over the base coaming by sewing it in the middle
2) place the top part of the coaming on the kayak and
3) use a hot nail or something else to melt the screw holes into the nylon skin before putting in the screws
4) cut the nylon 3/4" from the coaming
5) tighten the screws
6) use the same kind of stitch as for the bow and stern to finish the skin sewing inside the coaming
Do you see anything wrong with the above?
