Epoxy: Snowball

As I applied a finish coat of epoxy to the hull of my Merganser I scraped the excess resin from the squeegee into a cup that I left on the bench overnight. The next morning I saw what appeared to be a frozen snowball in the cup. The 3-1/2 ounces of aerated resin had expanded to a pile 3-1/2" diameter and 2-1/2" high. You can see a photo at the end of the page at http://twofootartist.com/merganser-construction-notes/ Can any of you engineers out there explain this? This did not happen with the excess epoxy from the deck, but there was less material. Did it need a critical mass to react this way?
