Might try first setting the iron about half way up, assuming it's a household iron (ask your wife first). Polyester can be shrunk several times at increasing temperatures unless you start at the highest heat setting. It can be an advantage to only shrinking it a little at first. Usually the paint will soften slightly with moderate heat and once cool will be just like it was before it was heated and while soft will allow the shrinking without causing problems.

Though I've not played with these heavier fabrics, I'm assuming that all polyester is fairly simliar in it's characteristics. I've had minor wrinkling before that I've fixed with a heat gun (held well away from the cloth).
