Comparing skin materials by price can get a bit complicated if you are trying to choose between precoated and uncoated materials.

The price of the coating and finishing materials can significantly increase your costs. Or not.

Consider one case, using canvas. If you use a canvas weave filler for a first coat, sand it smooth, and put on two coats of a good quality glossy marine enamel you will spend a lot more than if you just paint the cloth with a couple coats of mis-tinted house paint bought from the clearance shelf. Cotton duck or canvas, when attached with staples and painted with house paint is one of the least expensive skins. It is also fast and easy to apply.

But it is not for everyone. Substitute a synthetic fabric for the cotton canvas and your range of coatings expands; as does the price range.

Don't neglect considering the extra-heavyweight clear vinyl material from Wal-Mart. It is about $4. a running yard. It can be glued, stapled, or sewn. It looks stunning without needing paint.

With a skin-covered boat the frame will outlast several skins. If you don't like what you used for the first skin, you can try something different a few years later.
