I like tools too, but there is no reason to buy a planer or even try to get all the strips to the same width. Even if you have perfectly cut boards, all the same thickness, you should # the strips from each board and keep them together until you use them to allow yourself to have the same color and grain on each side of the boat. So, if the boards are consistent thicknesses within each board, you are fine with no more tools. I'd still buy a planer though.
