Consider a mosaic seat if you're interested in something a little less time-consuming and still pretty. See photo below.

I used a foam seat as a mold. A layer of plastic as a mold release, a layer of fiberglass, 1/8 inch (3mm) wood chips and an epoxy/sanding dust grout, a layer of plastic and sandbags to help keep shape. Sand when cured and add a fiberglass layer on top. Relatively simple, and the results are pretty.

A good factory seat would do nicely as a mold, too.
