Recess allows lower paddling strokes
In Response To: Seeking: Pros/Cons of recessed cockpits/coaming (psycoguyabd)
A recessed cockpit also allows lower paddling strokes. The paddle can be held lower, which is often less fatiguing.
As an alternative, making the cockpit larger and wider would help accomplish some of this.
A recessed cockpit can also add a significant artistic effect to the kayak. I think it's worth doing.
