: Where in Kansas do you get your 1x4 cedar?

Just came back from Sutherland's lumber in Waldo. When I was there they had a good selection of 1x3's that I picked through and got some pretty nice ones. By pretty nice I mean one or two 1/2" or less knots in a line. Some with no knots. Most of it is stained, but after it gets ripped and milled the stain disappears with the sawdust. Do watch out for mold that is in the wood and not just on the surface. The lumber is still wet, but it dries fairly quickly once you get it cut into strips.

Try any Sutherlands, don't do Home Depot or Lowes, their selection is not suitable for ripping. Schutte has some very nice D Select with maybe one knot and no stains, but I didn't want to pay the price for it 1x4 is $1.37 linear foot, 1x6 at $2.27 and 1x8 at $3.12. One kayak will cost about $250, Sutherlands is 1/2 that.
