The process most people use is to temporarily reattach the hatch cover using tape, hot-melt glue, and/or slivers of wood, then add a plastic layer over the inside of the deck. Attach a thin foam strip, and then mold the rim on top of that. The plastic layer is a mold release, preventing the rim from sticking to the deck or hatch cover.

After the epoxy is hard enough, the whole rim is taken off, trimmed, and then glued back in place.
