Some builders try to fill voids with a matching sliver of wood. I gave up on that route ... no matter how well I match the wood it always ends up looking like a sliver of wood stuck in a crack.

These days I just fill voids with a mixture of epoxy, cabosil and wood dust ... making sure the mixture is always darker than the surrounding wood ... I never try to match the colors ... and better that the filler is too dark than too light.

I take the time to completely mask around each ding or crack and I apply the filler with a putty knife. Do it right and you'll have virtually no sanding to do.
