No it's not the absence of staples (I'm using staples). It's just that the strips do some supreme twisting at station 16' in order to meet the form, and if allowed to form naturally, it creates a bulge (see pic). Staples aren't enough to make them follow the form. (If I'd used a heat gun or thinner/less width strips it would presumably have been easier.)
