: And thank you for it! I'm currently endeavoring to come up with a clever way
: of further recessing an already low coaming for improved rolling fun, and
: your photos go a long way towards helping me visualize some of the weird
: stuff that can happen there.
: Thanks also 'cuz your S&G WW boat is a very cool project, hope you'll keep us
: amused .... I mean, apprised .... as she moves forward. Only WW I've
: managed so far was "Mister Bubbles" as a kid, but maybe someday.
I remember reading your post, and I wanted to toss out some of my ideas at the time, but when I tried writing them out, I just couldn't explain it well. The pictures explain much better what I did than I could have prior to doing it.
I'll give you some of my key lessons learned through building this recess.
-If you recess all with those front and side pieces, bevel all of the edges from the back side only. At first I thought that I have opposite bevels to meet up and match everything up at thick wood... Didn't work well. A nice fillet will fill up that space nicely.
-I designed the entire thing using measurements from my body in how I like to fit into a kayak. So that recess is actually meant to act as thigh hooks as much as it is to lower where the coaming is sitting. Likewise, what you don't see (because I haven't built it), is the coaming riser behind my back will be two cedar strips thick, instead of just on. That way I can have a nice deep angled cutout to clear for laying back when I come up from a roll (altho I prefer rolling up into a forward position in the meat).
-The easiest way to design the cockpit is from a vertical view. That may go without saying, but I tried doing all this planning beforehand, and when it came down to it, I followed my top view design and intuition, and I'm pleased with the way it came out.
Good luck I look forward to seeing what you come up with~
