Perhaps.

Large globs of hot glue will hold harder AND set up very slow. I use 1/8" dots of glue which hold well and set fast.

There are quite a few different hot glue formulas for wood. Some are more soft and sticky, which I've found are more difficult to make release cleanly.

I used to use the yellow cast hot glue you mentioned which had been available at some hardware stores, but a few years ago I could no longer find it locally.

So, I've gone to web stores specializing in hot glue. I've bought a few different formulas of the hot glue for wood to find the one that has the best holding power with the cleanest releasing. This formula is a bit harder which allows it to break off cleanly.

Or, maybe you're just not whacking the forms hard enough. It should be like a baseball bat swing.
