I make mine using 1"x1"x1" pieces of good ol' WRC (use 3/4" if that's what y' got). Drill a 1/4" hole, with the grain, in the center of each. Chuck a piece of 1/4-20 threaded rod in the drill press or handheld drill, secure workpieces with a couple nuts. Use the coarsest sandpaper, grinder wheel, Shinto rasp, whatever to turn 'em down lathe-style. Finish with lighter grits to suit. Nuthin' to it!
As a WAG, I estimate the chances of finding suitable ready-made pieces at Micheal's, Hobby Lobby, et al, at roughly 80%. I routinely find myself prowling those places and scaring nice old ladies with my mysterious doings looking for fly tying materials. Heh, You oughta see me in beauty supply places looking at fingernail polishes....
