I'd certainly never talk anyone out of building a kayak, much too rewarding to miss. There are some boats that are very skinny that are also amazingly stable, my Yost Sea Ranger is a great example, it's only 19" wide and you'd almost have to try to roll it by mistake, I have to actually put the coaming into the water before it starts to get unstable and that's at about 30+ degrees of roll to do that. Of course my SR is also very long (added some length as the WRC gunwales were spliced over length and just couldn't bring myself to cutting them shorter. So I've got a 19 1/2' Sea Ranger.
