With the glass I've been using, 3.2 ounce, you could glass the exterior and likely not add as much weight as adding several coats of epoxy and it might actually be cheaper and would certainly be more rugged. Got the glass from Thayercraft, they are online and have by far the best prices on glass. A half roll (50 yards) was around $60.
