The first ones I built were back in 1985. One of those is on the rack in the shed a few yards from where I'm sitting and still gets used occassionally. I was out this afternoon in a tortured ply kayak built a decade ago. Of the seven kayaks I've built and the one and a half my partner has, none have more than tape on the seams.
