KBB PAINT POSTING
: Hi All,
: I'm planning on painting a pattern on the deck of my Cirrus hybrid. the
: pattern will be flanked either side with different colour timbers so I
: don't want the pattern to look like it is floating above timber.
: Therefore, I'm expecting that I will need to paint the pattern prior to
: glass and filling.
: The process bouncing around in my head goes like this: 1. Seal coat
: 2. Paint pattern
: 3. Glass and fill
: Can anybody see any flaws with this process?
: Should paint for the pattern be acrylic or enamel?
: Cheers
Enamel will almost certainly cause adhesion problems with epoxy. I have successfully used poster paint under epoxy, however. It doesn't seem to create a barrier layer; made up as it is of just powdered pigment and water, it seems to be inert, and plenty porous enough to allow a good bond. I suggest you try experimenting on sample panels before committing, however.
On two Cohos and a Tern 14 I used oil-based enamel to paint on top of the epoxy, adding colored sheer stripes and end details, and also painting the rather unattractive (imo) stacked plywood coamings and lips. Then I varnished over the paint, which gave everything a nice glow and provided some protection for the paint--see photos.
