The Norton stones are great and I've been using the same ones you bought for a few years. The only disappointment is that the 220 grit stone is so soft that it requires flattening after every minor sharpening operation, so I don't use it anymore. I now use sandpaper on a granite surface plate (the Chinese ones are surprisingly inexpensive) up to 400 grit to prep blades. I've also accumulated 3 different grinders and stationary sanders that I use for coarse blade prep (Craigslist is great for finding used tools like these!).
Recently, I started using the sharpening method that Lie-Nielsen recommends and it's the best I've found. They recommend a 1000/8000 grit waterstone, with sandpaper for coarse preparation. There are instructions on their site that are quite illuminating. http://www.lie-nielsen.com//pdf/Sharpening.pdf
After using this method, I agree with them that the 4000 grit stone is superfluous. I can't see any real need to go finer than 8000, and with waterstones, the more you hone, the finer the slurry on the stone becomes, so you're actually getting much finer grit anyway.
BTW, the kit you bought is available on Amazon for $119.95 with free shipping.
