Another option if you haven't made much progress or are too unhappy with how its going is to rip out what you've done and make the cut of the opening vertical. That would only increase the size of the recess by 1?4" at the most. That will make getting the joint right a lot easier and maybe faster in the long run. Also it is not necessary to run the strips right across from side to side (except at the front and back).
