To get rid of the bevel, I clamped a straight edge to the top (take care here to make it square or at the exact angle you want) then cut it with my worm drive hand saw.. (ya gotta love a saw that has you check the oil :-) Make sure your saw blade is square to the plate (sole or bottom of the saw) and have the wider side of the plate on the counter top. Then I lightly sanded the edge by hand. Next, joined the parts together with pocket screws from below, clamp liberally to ensure that the top is flush when driving the screws. I elongated some holes in the lower cabinets to screw up and into the counter top to anchor it in place. Sanded the whole thing with my ROS down to 220 grit, then I used a liberal amount of mineral oil (2 applications) when done. The back splash is screwed to the top, and is made with poplar.
