: My first strip-built, a Petrel kit from CLC should arrive shortly.
: I'd like to stain the deck one uniform color, but I'd like to
: also have some small detailing, thin lines of a lighter
: contrasting color.
: I saw on www.finewoodworking.com a video on "string
: inlay" using an homemade inlay cutter "tooth". It
: creates a long tapered groove in the wood that follows the edge
: of the wood that's about 1/8" in width. The thought is that
: I'd first create this groove along a length of cedar strip, then
: apply the strip, stain the deck to create the color I'm looking
: for, and then later apply the string inlay made out of white
: cedar into the groove as shown in the Fine Woodworking video.
: My question is - is there a better way? Has anyone had any
: experience with this approach?
: Fyi, you can find this "How to apply stringing" video on
: the Fine Woodworking web site here -

I'd certainly try this on a scrap piece of cedar ahead of time but I suspect that on the fairly thin strips it would cause splitting.
