Strip: hip plates

I'm curious - how many epoxy in hip plates, rather than simply padding out with minicell foam? I've seen a few examples here, also using a minicell back rather than a backband. Joe Greenleys highend seat comes to mind.

If you're not building a rolling machine, any advantages?
