I don't think I've ever seen a strip planked boat made from bamboo, but I know of at least one person that favors bamboo for rib stock (Brian @ Cape Falcon). I know there are several threads on the subject over at QajaqUSA, and I believe a few here. He uses bamboo ply, cut into 1/4" thick ribs, and steam bends it just like you would do with typical hard woods. From what I understand, the bamboo ply is similar to oak in density, and probably stronger than solid oak, but it is heavily processed and not really comparable to raw bamboo. A few builders in Greenland have reported use of bamboo for ribs, although from what I read on QajaqUSA, reviews are mixed. The successful accounts started with bamboo re-purposed from some kind of furniture, so it was already dry and cut into strips. A couple of years ago I attempted to dry some locally-grown bamboo into rib stock, but the stuff split badly and did not seem to have much strength once dry. I'm not sure what species it was, but it seemed to max out at about 1.75" diameter. That's not to say the bamboo you have won't work, no doubt the properties vary amongst the many different types in the same way it does with wood.

: Anyone out there used bamboo for a stripper or for a SOF? I am
: building a wood surfboard and was looking for alternative woods
: for my next board, which will be a stand-up paddleboard. I ran
: across some articles on Bamboo. I can cut the stuff here locally
: in 3 to 5" diameter which should yield 1/4"
: thicknesses. I'm thinking I may have found my rib material. It
: seems this stuff bends very well, and it doesn't shrink much
: when dried.

: In addition, I found a place that laminates the stuff into plywood.
: I figure someone could cut the gunwales out of bamboo ply and
: make a very light yet strong kayak. It appears bamboo is right
: in line with cedar for weight, and strength is insane.
