Hi George,
Waxed dental floss is hard to find here in Ireland too. I used polyester (dacron) fishing line as lashing material. It's fairly thin for its strength so doesn't make much of a bump. If you wax it with beeswax, it'll hold knows very well.
And any left over can be used for fishing. :)
