Take a look at Tom Yost's site, there's directions there (somewhere) about how to relieve the wood so the lashing won't show. Easier in pictures than trying to explain it in type. Basically though you're cutting grooves into the wood so the lashing will lay into those grooves then won't make bumps in the skin.
