Another approach is the use of shear clamps, as seen on the VOLKSKAYAK. A piece of 1/2"x1/2" pine is secured to the upper edge of the topsides and encapsulated with epoxy resin. The deck is prepared as usual - loosely lace the centreline, lay it over the forms, adjust it, tack with epoxy, then tape the center seam. When it cures, remove the deck, flip it over, tape the underside of the seam and epoxy-coat the ply. The shear clamp is then smeared with 'peanut butter' thickened epoxy, and the deck screwed down to the clamp. Once the epoxy sets, the screws are removed, the shear rounded over, and then taped. Strong and tough, the use of a shear clamp adds very little weight and simplifies construction by eliminating the need to tape the inside of the hull/deck seam.
