I've been playing around with this method of lashing strips on with monofilament line as an alternative to staple holes, and as an alternative to clamping on only one to two strips per day. It was slow going at first, but I'm finally getting the kinks out. Much gratitude goes out to Steve Chapman, who wrote an article in WoodenBoat some time ago, on his method of lashing strips for a canoe. My variation does not use holes drilled in the forms, so as to 'sew' the strips to the forms, but rather just a few strategically placed nails on each form that hold the lashings of several strips. There are more pics on my blog, and love to have some comments there, if anyone cares to offer any. I will elaborate on the lashing method later on.
My kayak is coming along nicely- it's far from perfect, but I'm quite pleased. I had very poor quality cedar to choose from, and I've had to do a LOT of scarfing, but for my first boat, I don't really care. It's all about learning, and there will be many more...
