Been thinking on this one a while. I wanted a boat to fish the local flowing creeks from. I have played with a fishing kayak. It was mainly a Rec. Boat with a large open cockpit. Added a well in the back for a cooler or milk crate. I just wasn't sure that was what I wanted on the creeks. After much debate I finally settled on a double paddle canoe. I like the openness for fishing from. Keeps the rods below the gunwales were it is not as likely to be dragged out of the boat by a limb.
I am going to frame her up fuselage style and skin in it a heavy weight nylon. I plan on fishing/paddling a lot of moving streams and that means a lot of abrasion and bumping around so gunwale and keel strips will be must. I am thinking about UHMW keel strip. I know it is going to get a lot of abuse.
