: I built a wood frame Yost Sea ranger last year and would like to be
: able to eskimo roll it, but not sure what additional outfitting
: is required. I am currently building float bags, sea sock, and
: deck rigging.
: What I don't have is:
: -seat (sitting on wooden slats, actually fairly comfortable for the
: short trips I have done)
: -backband
: -foot braces or anything for my
: -thighs support (I have found I can brace my thighs on the skin
: quite comfortably.)
: Can I learn to roll without these items?
I say roll it as it is (with the float bags). As long as you have a good connection with your thighs so you don't fall out (ocean style cockpit) you can roll. I've never had a backband and did my first roll in a boat with no foot bracing. I believe I have rolled a Sea ranger and didn't find it difficult. Stay with a standard layback roll to start.
It might be more comfortable if you have some padding on the floor and where your back hits the coaming. Other than that a good friend/instructor should be able to get you going.
Have fun!

P.S. If you give your location, lots of people will volunteer to get you started - especially on the first half of the roll. :)
