You should check out the Scotty Sea Light. It has a 2 mile range, and they make one that has a 42" pole so it sticks up high. I don't like the pole being that high. I currently use a clamp-on light with about a 24" height that I clamp to a board which slides under my deck rigging. It also has Coast Guard legal 2-mile visibility. I am going to rig up something a bit more permanent. I was kind of experimenting. What I found after trying that light and head-mounted lights (headlamps front and back) is that the all-around light gives good visibility without messing up your night vision. I think the bow light combined with the 360 would eliminate the problem of your body blocking the 360 light.
As for being mistaken for a boat on a mooring I would much rather be mistaken for a moored boat than to not be seen at all!
