Take a strip and plane the surface. If the defect disappears with the first pass you're fine.

If not, it may be a defect that runs right through the piece of wood.

It is oh so tempting to use wood that you got cheap or from your own land,

And it's very hard to not use wood you bought when you didn't pick the best quality. Been there, done that!

First grade wood may cost a lot of money but it's worth every penny. And you only have to pay for it once.

You pay for cheap wood at least three times.

Once when you buy it,
Once when you try to mill it,
And forever when you look at it!
