It's not uncommon for traditional historic kayaks to have rub strips on the bow and stern keel, and I've seen seal skin up close on real historic kayaks and it is THICK. If you don't want rub strips, another solution would be leading edge tape. It's super tough. It's intended to protect the leading edge of aircraft propellers from abrasion, and it is also used on the leading edge of wings on traditional cloth-covered aircraft for the same thing you want it for- to protect lightweight polyester sealed with a type of paint.
