For step 9, don't use the roll of fiberglass tape - it won't wet-out as transparently as the cloth. Instead, bias cut some strips from your leftover cloth and piece them together along the exterior seam. I prefer to butt them together rather than overlap. Since this results in somewhat ragged line of tape down the seam, consider masking-off 1 to 1-1/2" on either side of the joint with wide blue painters tape first, then epoxy the bias cut strips. When leather hard, pull the tape off slowly while trimming the glass right at the tape edge with a razor blade. Apply some at least 1 fill coat before trying to feather the seam glass edge, or you'll end-up with epoxy dust filling all the dimples in the textured surface.
Also, if you're adding strip bulkheads, you can get some glassing experience on them before moving on to the hull.
Good luck,
Ross
: Well, I'm about ready to glass my 14 ft great auk. It's my first
: strip built boat and I have almost no fiberglass experience. I
: have countless hours looking through many of these threads,
: Nick's book (building strip planked boats), other websites,
: etc., for fiberglass info; I have found a lot of info and am
: probably just making things worse, by continuing to look.
: Does the following sound about right?
: fiberglasssupply.com
: either 20 yds of 38" 6oz eglass or 15 yds of 50" 4oz
: eglass
: 2.4 gallons of west system resin and hardener (rookie, expecting to
: waste some)
: 25 yds of 8.71oz tape (for sheer seem)
: I would like to put a seal coat on before the glass. So, for the
: process, I am looking at the following (internal frame):
: 1) apply epoxy coat to outside hull
: 2) glass outside hull
: 3) apply epoxy coat to outside deck
: 4) glass outside deck
: 5) glass inside hull
: 6) glass inside deck
: 7) apply additional layer of glass to stems (anywhere else?)
: 8) tape inside sheer seam
: 9) tape outside sheer seam
: 10) varnish
: I need to get some new pics posted to the following site, but minus
: a couple new images, here it is:
: Thanks!
