It would have to be a pretty beefy piece of dowel or bamboo, and even then if you were doing more than putzing on flat water it would get really uncomfortable pushing against something so small even with soled shoes. I think foam is the simplest, but I don't know if it would work in a bulkhead-type kayak. Once long ago when I had more time I planned to build a set of the footbraces from Nick's book, but now it just seems like a ton of work for something that doesn't adjust very easily and weighs a lot.
