That seems to be the way to do it from everything that I have read also, as far as my initial question the internal stem does extend beyond the shear about 3/4 of an inch and rounds over the deck so to speak a bit also, I think I will just carry on and when it comes to it I can use that to glue the two deck shear strips to and cut the stem between the two shears to seperate the deck and hull...seems logical I'll cross that bridge when I get there.
