: I am building a Guillemot Double and in the market for a low angle
: block plane. My question is: Do I need an "Adjustable
: Mouth" block plane, or is a regular low angle block plane
: sufficient? I am willing to spend the extra for the adjustable
: mouth but I am uncertain if I need it. I am looking at the
: Lie-Nielson's planes specifically.
: Block Plane: http://www.lie-nielsen.com/catalog.php?sku=102 ($115)
: Adjustable Mouth: http://www.lie-nielsen.com/catalog.php?grp=1216
: ($165)
: Any thoughts are welcome.
I bought one of the Lie-Nielson rabbet block planes. It has the blade all the way to the edge so if you want to get up against the forms and still cut you can. The blade is super hard and doesn't require resharpening very often. It doesn't have an adjustable mouth but cedar and redwood are not much of a challenge when it comes to tear out.
It turns out I use the rabbit plane almost all the time and the thick blade makes hand sharpening easier without all the jigs.
That being said I still use my "hecho in Mexico" Stanley too. You know the drill-one on one side of the boat one on the other.....until they both end up on the same side of the boat which happens to be on the opposite side you are on.
