Hi Joe,
I have used the same and they turned out about that thick with no problem. That was a flat lip like Nick's book illustrates. I have just finished a recessed channel type lip, also known at the One Ocean Kayak method using carbon and glass. The latter was thicker due to the formed Chanel and it seems stiffer. I think both ways will hold the lid in place under the loads of the retention system you use. The desire to over build is hard to over come. Have fun.
