I am also building a Merganser. This weekend I will fiberglasss the outside hull to deck seam and the combing.
I considered a skeg. But I think paddle it first and see how it handles. I live in Michigan and paddle rivers and lakes most of the time. Cant wait to try it in lake Michigan surf.

The large hatch may make the rear deck weak. You could reinforce the under side of the deck with some carbon fiber or fiberglass rib bands. Or just install it before bonding the deck on.
