After blowing several strips of mahogany due to grain runout, I decided to route in the “wrong” direction. With the proper setup and adjustment of the fingerboards, I have routed several thousand linear feet using back routing (also called “climb cutting”) with no problems whatsoever. I have routed wild grain, knots, and uphill grain and produced near perfect strips (nothing is actually perfect). I have described the technique in my book; the link below is from an earlier chapter on my web site.
