I like the hatches to follow the strips. It blends in better. I did see a very nice boat with oval rubber hatches and it looked good. Rather than hiding them he made them look like they belong.

As for the paddle, you must try a Greenland paddle. They are much better in wind and you will be amazed at the power you'll get.
