A friend modified this plane for me: http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=32700&cat=1,230,41182
Lee Valley also sells one: http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=57205&cat=1,230,41182
The modified one works fine. The radius is a compromise, you have to decide if you want a radius suited to most of where you will use it (shallow radius for most of the inside hull and deck or tighter radius for the tighter curves near the ends).
I've used curved scrapers a lot but wouldn't want to be without the plane.
Ric
Nick mentions in his book that a convex plane is useful. This is
: convex across the width, not the length like the Lie Nielsen
: convex sole block plane. Every commercial plane I see is convex
: along the length like a compass plane.
: A few questions:
: 1. Has anyone tried to modify a standard block plane as Nick
: suggests and what do you think of the modified plane?
: 2. What radius did you use and what works the best?
: 3. Any suggestions of tools or modified tools to make the interior
: smoothing an easier experience?
