Seems like a reasonable idea to me, Malcolm. I agree that you should make sure its weighted enough to be stable when using. Sounds kind of like the saw the Walton's used in the show...homey looking thing that worked well. Make sure the motor mounts are reinforced well so that the motor doesn't cut loose on you one day...ie the blade jams and the mounts are suddenly stressed.
